National Signing Day was last Wednesday, marking the first day that high school seniors in track and field could sign a national letter of intent to the college of their choice. Many of the nation’s top high school hammer throwers used the date to announce their college decision. Leading the way were top returners Daniel Haugh (St. Pius X, Atlanta, GA) and Colin Minor (South Brunswick, Southport, NC) who committed to attend the University of Alabama and Dartmouth College respectively. Haugh also currently has the furthest weight throw mark of 2014.
Among the top girls signing a national letter of intent was Kelli Thomas (Luella, Locust Grove, GA). Thomas had the third best mark in the US last season and currently leads the nation in the weight throw. Gabby Figueroa (Austintown Fitch, Youngstown, OH), currently ranked second in the weight throw just behind Thomas, also commited to Louisianna State University along with Wisconsin record holder Sidnie Wilder (Cameron, WI).
