California State Hammer Championships Results

High school hammer in California is really starting to take off. The was shown by the over 50 participants at the California State High School Hammer Championships on Sunday. Due to the size of the state, the meet was held in two locations and the results were combined to determine the state champion. While guest Jacob Beene (Gilbert, AZ) had the best mark, Tyler Merkley (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga, CA) won a close competition for the boy’s title with a personal best of 205’07”. It was Merkely’s first meet over 200 feet. State leader Jeremy Franklin (Serra, Carson, CA) took second place and also was over 200 feet.

One week early at the state championships Stamatia Scarvelis (Dos Pueblos, Goleta, CA) swept the shot put and discus titles. At the hammer championships she threw a 15 foot season’s best to add the hammer title to the resume this year. She has also won two more shot put titles and another state hammer title in her career and will continue throwing at UCLA next season. Her throw of 161’06” on Sunday (video below) at the southern competition was enough to overcome personal bests by Emelda Maim-Annan (Elk Grove, CA) and Kyla O’Brine (St. Francis, Elk Grove, CA) in the northern competition.
