After trading wins all season, teammates Bobby Colantonio (Barrington, RI) and Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI) once again had a close battle at the Rhode Island State Championships on Saturday. In the end, Colantonio ended up on top with a win by less than two feet. The most exciting part is that neither throwers are seniors and will continue to produce many great competitions next season.

The win by Colantonio was also historic in several regards. It was just the second time ever a sophomore had won the state hammer championship. The last time it happened Alvin Jackson (Classical, Providence, RI) won with a throw of 199’04” back in 1970. Colantonio also isn’t the only hammer throw state champion in his family; his father Bob Colantonio won the event back in 1978. (Thank you to Keith Lawton and Rick Marshall for helping with the statistical research.) His half-sister Nicole Allyn (now Nicole Marchesseault) also placed second in 2001.

The girl’s competition also featured a great showdown between Leia Mistowski (Narragansett, RI) and Alva Hicks (Classical, Providence, RI). Mistowski is the state leader, but Hicks threw a personal best to beat her last week. As expected, the competition was very close with Mistowski capturing the title by just one foot.
