USATF Junior Championships (OR) Women’s Results
In the first day of action at the USATF Junior Championships, high school junior Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO) captured the victory with a come-from-behind effort of her last attempt. The USATF Junior Championships are open to all athletes born in 1995 or younger. The top two finishers earn the right to represent the US at the World Junior Championships in Eugene later this month. Showalter, the 2014 high school leader and also a Youth Olympics team member in the discus, is two years younger than most of her competitors yet managed to overtake Brooke Anderson of Northern Arizona University on her last attempt. But Anderson is likely not too disappointed since she also qualified for the World Junior Championships and has a slightly better personal best than Showalter.
In total, six of the eleven competitors were high school athletes. After Showalter, Lena Giger (Highland, CO) was the next highest finisher. She was knocked off the podium into fourth place in the final round but still put in a strong effort. Senior Nyla Woods (Henry W. Grady, Atlanta, GA) also broke into the top five.
