Track & Field News High School Girls All-America Team

On Tuesday we presented the Track and Field News 2014 Boys High School All-American Team. Today we present the three hammer throwers that earned the girls honors. You can read the complete list of girls All-Americans from Track and Field News here. This year’s girls team included:

Rank Name School
1 Haley Showalter Valor, Highlands Ranch, Colorado
2 Sabrina Gaitán Sprayberry, Marietta, Georgia
3 Lena Giger Highland, Illinois

tfnJunior Haley Showalter had a strong year which culminated in a win at the USATF Junior National Championships and participation in the IAAF World Junior Championships. She also placed a close second at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in one of her rare losses this season. But she came out on top again against her closest competitors a few weeks later at the Chicagoland Throws Series. Just this week Showalter announced she will attend the University of Wisconsin after she graduates from high school in June.

Sabrina Gaitán was ranked second after she won New Balance Outdoor Nationals on her final attempt. Gaitán was unable to compete at the USATF Junior Championships since she represents Guatemala, but she placed 18th at the World Junior Championships throwing for the Central American country. She is also the only athlete on the list that also won the honor in 2013 and as just a junior will have a chance to win a third honor next year.

Ranked third was Lena Giger who only started throwing the hammer again later in the season after a break from the event. But that was enough to break her own state record and be among the best in the nation. She placed fourth at New Balance Outdoors and was the second best high school thrower at the USATF Junior Championships. Giger will throw next season for Stanford University. Just missing the list was Gabby Figueroa (Austintown Fitch, Youngstown, OH). While she had just the fifth best throw in the nation this year, she put together some strong performances when it mattered. After winning the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Figueroa followed that up with a third place finish at New Balance Outdoors. Figueroa is currently enrolled at LSU.
