Rhode Island Indoor State Championships Results

Favorites Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI) and Alva Hicks (Classical, Providence, RI) took home wins at this year’s Rhode Island State Indoor Championships. Kelly entered the competition seeded more than six feet better than his closest competitor Bobby Colantonio (Barrington, RI). Colantonio provided a big challenge though as he threw a personal best of nearly three feet. In the end Kelly won by a foot and a half and was just under the 15-year-old meet record. Third place went to Owen Russell (Moses Brown, Providence, RI) with another Barrington thrower, Mike Alvernaz (Barrington, RI), breaking 70-feet for fourth place. In all, Barrington captured 22 points in the event which put them in the early lead in the boy’s team competition.

Hicks had been hovering around her personal best in recent weeks and finally let one go on Saturday to set a new personal best and win by an impressive five feet. Her teammate Lysah Russell (Classical, Providence, RI) took second and Courtney Jacobsen (Toll Gate, Warwick, RI) placed third with a personal best effort. Hicks will try to win a second gold this weekend as she also enters the meet as the favorite in the shot put and Classical is making a push for the girl’s team title.
