Early Outdoor Results

Despite many fouls, Walter Henning opened up with a new junior class record in the hammer throw last weekend. He set a new personal best of 237’05” with the 12-pound hammer and 226’08” with the 6-kilogram hammer at the St. Anthony’s All-Comers meet. A week earlier he threw a best of 198’02” with the 16-pound hammer and followed that up with a mark of 194’11” last weekend.

In Washington, throwers have also begun their outdoor season. Jordan Stray (Centralia, WA) threw a new personal best of 201’03” to win the Camas Field Festival ahead of sophomore Zack Richards (Monroe, WA). Richards also threw a personal best of 185’03”. Gabby Midles (Camas, WA) won the girl’s competition at 128’02”.

Nike Indoor Nationals (MD)

Walter Henning (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY) set a new national record at this year’s Nike Indoor Nationals. Henning led a slew of PRs in the boy’s competition. His best throw measured 83’02.50″ to eclipse Leif Arrhenius’ national record by three and a half inches.

Eric Flores (Custer, SD) also threw a big best of 75’11.00″ to take second place, while Trevor Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) threw 74’11.75″ for third. In addition, six of the top finishers were from different states.

Season-leader Emily Bernhardt easily won the girl’s comepetition with a throw of 54’04.75″. She outdistanced runner up Jennier Mack (Custer, SD) by over five feet.

Boys Weight Throw

From Dyestat: At the same time the vault fireworks were going on, Walter Henning was staging a one-man pyrotechnic display of his own over in the weight cage.

The 6-2, 224-pound junior from St. Anthony’s High School (South Huntington, NY), had a heart-stopping series of 77-4.5, 83-2, 78-1.5, 81-8.5, 81-2.75 and 81-5.25. Henning’s second round mark bettered the two-year old national indoor prep record of 82-10. It also gave him the best-ever junior class record.

“I was doing really good in practice this week,” said Henning. “I came here last night for practice and had a couple of 80-foot practice throws.

Henning’s heroics shaded the rest of the competition. Eric Flores (Custer, WY) was second with a 75-11 while junior Trevor Krachir (Twenty-nine Palms, CA), the son of former shot putter Hank Kraychir, took third with a mark of 74-11.75.

“I was real happy with today,” said Henning. “These were my best four throws, and now I have nine over 80 feet.”

Henning said he’s a dozen pounds heavier this year than he was in 2005, when he placed fourth at the Nike Indoors. “Last year my focus was all on training,” he said.

National Scholastic Indoor Championship (NY)

Walter Henning (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY) and Emily Bernhardt (Lassiter, Marietta, GA) both claimed their second title of the weekend. Bernhardt won a close women’s competition over teammate Lauren Chambers (Kell, Marietta, GA). Chamber’s best of 52’07.25″ set a new personal best and official national freshman class record. While her old personal best was 51’07.00″, her official national record was only 47’02.50″.

Henning, picture to the right, also had a record setting day. He opened up the competition with a solid 81′ throw and then improved to 85′ on his second throw and then 85’06.25″ on his third attempt to break his own national record. His previous record was set on Saturday with at 83’02.50″.

Boys Weight Throw

Note from Dyestat: St Anthony’s NY junior Walter J Henning had never thrown further than 81 feet in this event before this Saturday. But on that day in Maryland he got four efforts over 81 feet, including a new national record of 83.2’5. However, that was only an appetizer for Sunday’s competition at the Armory.

Henning challenged the distance limits of the New York throwing circle, almost knocking over the barriers at the far end several times. He recorded four throws better than his national record from the day before, including an 85-footer on second attempt and a stunning 85’6 on the third one.

The new champion has been throwing for several years, but he did not take up the weight throw until 8th grade. However, he did not learn the importance of proper rest and lifting weights until this season. No longer did he feel sluggish and tired at championship meets and no longer did he lack upper body strength the way he had in the past.

Focusing to peak this weekend, the 6’2, 220-pound Henning took several days easy after winning the shot at the New York state meet last week with a 58’0.5 put, eight and a half inches off his personal best. He still does all the throwing events, but he will focus on making the World Junior Championships in 6-kilogram hammer throw this summer. His personal best is 180 feet from last year, but with the improved training he’s hit as far as 210 feet in practice.

Girls Weight Throw

Note from Dyestat: Marietta, GA, has become the girls weight throw capitol, taking five of the top seven places and six of the top nine. Emily Bernhardt led the group, winning by 1 centimeter or ¼-inch with a throw of 52-5 ½ from Lauren Chambers. Chambers shattered her own national freshman record of 47-2 ½. Eighth grader Patrice Gates was fourth with what probably is a class record of 50-5 ½.
