California H.S. Hammer Championships (CA)

Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills, CA) made his season debut with the 12# hammer and moved straight into the national lead at the California High School Hammer Championships. McCullough threw a best of 250’01” to easily win the competition. Trent Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) took second place throwing left handed. McCullough’s throw moves him to into third on the all-time list and reclaims his state record from Kraychir.

The Kraychir sisters had a close duel in the girl’s competition. Older sister Casey Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) led the entire competition, but her younger sister Katie Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) came within one foot of her in the final round. Arianna Lugo (Los Altos, Hacienda Heights, CA) threw a personal best of 151’04” for third place.

The boy’s also had a 5-kilogram competition. The 5-kilogram hammer is the official IAAF implement for youth (under 18) throwers. In the first round, Conor McCullough set a new national record with the implement. McCullough improved the record to 80.39m (263’09”) in the second round remained consistent for the rest of the competition. The previous national record was held by Walter Henning (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY). Henning set the previous record of 79.14m at the BC Juvenile Championships in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada on July 15, 2006.

Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (CA)

A few high school athletes took part in this year’s Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at Pomona College in Claremont, CA. Casey Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) stole the headlines on the girl’s side with a new national sophomore class record throw of 53.68m (176’01”). That throw barely eclipses the old record of 176’00” thrown by Kate Johnston (Warwick Veterans Memorial, Warwick, RI) back in 1999. Katie Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) was also close to a record. She was less than ten feet away from her older sister’s national freshman class record of 173’04” set last season. Trent Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) also tossed 212’11”.

National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NY)

In his first weight throw competition ever, junior Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills, CA) set a new national record in the weight throw on Sunday to win the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. Last season, McCullough ranked second in the hammer throw with a sophomore record toss of 243’11”. Prior to Sunday, McCullough had never thrown a weight in competition. However, that did not stop him from throwing a national record of 87’10.75″. The throw eclipsed Walter Henning’s (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY) national record of 86’05.50″ thrown at the same meet last year. It also broke the north american high school record of 87’05.00″ set by Dylan Armstrong (Kamloops, BC, Canada) set back in 1999. Second place at the competition went to former national leader Wes Wright (Villa Rica, GA).

Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, RI) almost made it two national records in one meet. Flowers won the girl’s competition on Sunday morning with a throw that was just 1.5″ off of her own national record. She will end the season as the national record holder and most consistent women’s thrower in high school history. Patrice Gates (Villa Rica, CA) took second, with Lauren Chambers (Kell, Marietta, GA) in third.
