Nike Indoor Nationals (MD)

Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, RI) broke 60 feet yet again to win the Nike Indoor National title in convincing fashion. Flowers fouled two of her first three throws, but gradually improved throughout the competition to a best mark of 61’02.00″ in the final round. Katie Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) placed second.

Michael Gama (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) threw a three foot personal best to win the boy’s competition. Gama led throughout in a competition that featured three boy’s over 70 feet. Mitchell Gormley (Brookwood, Snellville, GA) took second despite a late charge by Patrick Onye (Classical, Providence, RI).

Weightarama 2008 (RI)

Patrick Onye (Classical, Providence, RI ) set a new meet record at Weightarama 2008 this past weekend. Onye was just inches away from setting a new personal best and easily won the boy’s competition. Mike Gama (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) placed second with an impressive three foot personal best. Not only did Gama move up to third on the national list, he also eclipsed 70 feet for the first time.

Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, RI) was also in good form once again. She won the competition by over seven feet with a toss of 59’04.00″, which also set a meet record. Bethany Karter-O’Brien (Waterville, ME) also set a big personal best for second place.

In the boy’s 35-pound weight throw, yet another meet record was set by Patrick Onye. This time, Onye surpassed his own record set last year. He ended up setting a new personal best of 58’08.50″.

IAAF World Youth Championships

After leading qualifiers yesterday with a personal best effort, Conor McCullough emerged as a favorite for today’s final, eventually placing fourth. The final started out rocky for McCullough who fouled his first two attempts. He moved into fourth on his third attempt and secured three more throws. While he improved in the fourth and fifth rounds, McCullough remained in fourth through the rest of the meet. Andriy Martynyuk, the world youth leader, won a close competition in which the top five finishers were separated by little more than five feet. Martynyuk finished with a best of 76.09 meters while McCullough finished at 74.54 meters.

USATF Junior National Championships (IN)

Another meet and another record for Walter Henning. Henning set a new national junior record with the 6kg hammer at this year’s USATF Junior National Championships at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. Henning had a very consistent series with a best throw of 73.59m (241’05”) on his fifth attempt. Henning set the previous record last season with a toss of 238’02”.

The USATF Junior Championships is open to any athlete who will not reach the age of 20 during the 2007 calendar year. As such, several college freshman took part in the competition. Former high school standout Emily Bernhardt won the girl’s competition. Senior Gabby Midles (Camas, WA), however, came close to the fin on her final throw by moving from fifth to second place and setting a new personal best in the process.

Nike Outdoor Nationals (NC)

Walter Henning (St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, NY) defended his Nike Outdoor Nationals title, but not without some tougher competition this season. Henning, a senior, was provided some tough competition from sophomore Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills, CA). After the first round, Henning led my a mere three feet, and McCullough narrowed the gap in the latter rounds. After having the win secured in the sixth round, Henning finally improved to his winning mark of 249’00”.

National leader Allison Horner (Lovett, Marietta, GA) captured the girls title. Like Henning, Horner led throughout the competition. Victoria Flowers (Classical, Providence, RI) took a close second place with freshman Patrice Gates (Villa Rica, GA) close behind.

Golden West Invitational (CA)

Walter Henning dominated the boy’s competition at this year’s Golden West Invitational, but he was not the only one without a good throw. Both Jodan Stray and Trevor Kraychir threw personal best to place second and third respectively. However, the competition was fairly static without many changes in position.

The girl’s competition, on the other hand, was much closer with the top three finishers within five feet of each other. Canadian Emma Maccorquodale won the competition, with Gabby Midles in second and freshman Casey Kraychir placing third.
