Comparing the year-end rankings

Last week we posted our hammer throw world men’s rankings and women’s rankings. That was just one man’s perspective on the year. In order to get a higher level picture of the year, we decided to compare the major rankings. Below you will find two more subjective rankings from leading publications Track and Field News and Athletics Weekly, both compiled expert panels. In addition, we have included the computerized rankings from All-Athletics. In 2018 a new ranking developed by All-Athletics will be launched and be used by the IAAF in the qualification process for major championships. Read more

Looking Back at 2017: Women’s Hammer Rankings

While the men’s hammer featured more competition at the top this year, the women’s hammer was once again the highlight event of the year. Anita Wlodarczyk is a generational athlete that has propelled the sport to a new level and once again led the way on this year’s rankings. But the competition for the other spots was fierce. 2017 World Championships Preview: Women’s Hammer Throw

The 2017 World Championships kick off today in London. For hammer throwers the action starts tomorrow with the women’s qualification round. While the favorite is the surest bet of the entire meet, the women’s hammer will feature a wide open competition for the podium. Poland, China, and America bring the strongest teams of throwers with multiple medal hopefuls each. After a surprise Olympic bronze last summer, Sophie Hitchon will try to make another podium in front of a home crowd. And many other top throwers will join the battle too. Read more

In fact 2016 was the first time the season’s best in the women’s hammer was better than the men’s hammer. 2016 Olympic Preview: Women’s Hammer Throw

After a four year wait, Olympic track and field action starts up today and one of the first events will be the women’s hammer throw. And I can’t think of a better event to start with. The hammer throw not only features high level action with the best chance of a world record in Rio, but it also adds drama as a wide open field will make for an interesting battle to get on the podium.
