May 2019 in review: the young athlete

Sometimes we take training young athletes for granted. Give them almost anything and they will see some initial growth, but true long-term development requires a more thoughtful process. This month on HMMR Media we explored training the young athlete. Through 3 new videos, 4 podcasts, and 4 articles from 11 world class coaches we explored examples of training methods, long-term athlete development, key issues facing youth athletics, as well as ideas on how these concepts can be transferred to older athletes as well. April 2019 in review: mental training

Physically developing athletes is only part of the game. Champions require excellence across all pillars of sport, from the tactical to technical, from the physical to mental. Throughout the month we took a look at how athletes can improve their mental game, with a special focus on case studies of how concepts are put into practice by top coaches and athletes. We put together 3 new podcasts and 8 new articles from our team of coaches. Read more

March 2019 in review: throwing

For our March site theme, we turn our attention from jumping to throwing. This site started out focused on the throwing events in track and field: shot put, discus, javelin and the hammer throw. Over the past decade we have expanded the scope to cover training and coaching for a wide range of sports. But this month we returned to our roots by putting together 7 new articles, 4 new podcasts, and 2 new videos covering all 4 throwing events. Read more

February 2019 in review: plyometrics

In the end, nearly all of sport comes down to speed. Plyometric training is an essential tool to train speed. By focusing on the stretch-shortening of muscle action, plyometric training looks at how to improve speed in a different way than simple weight lifting. This month on HMMR Media we focused on plyometric training, putting together 2 new videos, 1 new podcast, and 4 great articles looking at the topic from different perspectives from plyometric progressions to better variations and plyometrics in rehabilitation. December 2018 in review: Warming up

The warm up is over so quick, we hardly give it much thought. We often just fall into our routines and move on to the next part of training. To try and break up those routines, our site them in December focused on finding new ideas and reminding coaches of old ideas. We pulled together four new articles, plus a new video, new podcast, and member hangout on the topic. Read more

November 2018 in review: book club

Some people say a picture is worth a thousand words, but for some concepts a good book can be worth a thousand pictures. There’s no doubt then why so many world-class coaches are avid readers not only about sports, but about all kinds of topics. As a great doctor once said: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” That doctor was Dr. Seuss, which goes to show you can learn from all types of books. Read more

October 2018 in review: the microcycle

Last year in one of our first site themes we focused on periodization and understanding adaptation. In October we decided to revisit periodization as a site theme, but this time from a different perspective: looking in depth at the microcycle. In designing a training plan, the focus is normally placed on the individual session, or the larger mesocycles or macrocycles. The microcycle often gets lost in the middle. Read more

Like his methods or not, it is hard not to agree that Frans Bosch has been one of the most influential coaches in strength and conditioning over the past few years. Since publishing his most recent book Strength Training and Coordination: An Integrative Approach in 2015, Bosch has created a conversation about how strength coaches can help improve coordination and motor learning, not just strength. Over the past few years I’ve had the chance to get more involved in the sport of rugby. The complex demands of the sport, combined with the fraternity of players and coaches, have been a great learning experience for me.
