Last week we posted our hammer throw world men’s rankings and women’s rankings. Some of the other leading publications also released their rankings recently, including Track and Field News and Athletics Weekly, both compiled by expert panels. Last weekend we released our men’s world rankings. Today it’s time for our women’s rankings. For the sixth straight year, Anita Wlodarczyk led the way in the women’s hammer throw. Without a truly global championship, many consider 2018 an off year. But if you look closer, the year was full of some big meets, including the European Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. Comparing the year-end rankings

Last week we posted our hammer throw world men’s rankings and women’s rankings. That was just one man’s perspective on the year. In order to get a higher level picture of the year, we decided to compare the major rankings. Below you will find two more subjective rankings from leading publications Track and Field News and Athletics Weekly, both compiled expert panels. In addition, we have included the computerized rankings from All-Athletics. In 2018 a new ranking developed by All-Athletics will be launched and be used by the IAAF in the qualification process for major championships. Read more

While the men’s hammer featured more competition at the top this year, the women’s hammer was once again the highlight event of the year. Anita Wlodarczyk is a generational athlete that has propelled the sport to a new level and once again led the way on this year’s rankings. But the competition for the other spots was fierce. Just four athletes from the 2016 rankings managed to make it back on this year’s list. Six new athletes emerged including the next generation of throwers and some old names returning to the top. Looking Back at 2016: Women’s Rankings

I’ll get straight to the point . . . this year the women’s hammer was about one thrower: Anita Wlodarczyk. The sport has never seen such a dominating figure. In fact 2016 was the first time the season’s best in the women’s hammer was better than the men’s hammer. But putting together the rankings after her was not as easy as throwers scrambled to position themselves. Below you will find my top 10 rankings for 2016. Looking Back at 2016: Men’s Hammer Rankings

As has been the case the last several years, the men’s hammer throw this year featured a densely packed field of throwers trading spots on the circuit. But unlike last year, where Pawel Fajdek ran the table, even the top position was not entirely clear as he stumbled on the biggest stage this year. Other perrenial favorites, like Krisztian Pars, hit troubles due to injury. This made my task of compiling an annual ranking harder than normal.
