Martin Luther King Day Open (GA)

Georgia’s best competed at the Martin Luther King Day Open in Marietta on Sunday. Emily Bernhardt (Lassiter, Marietta, GA) won women’s competition with a throw of 55’09.00″, just off of her nation-leading mark of 56’07.25″. Runner-up Kristen Smith (Sprayberry, Marietta, GA) was also just inches off of her season best as were freshman Lauren Chambers (Kell, Marietta, GA) and sophomore Allison Horner (Lovett, Marietta, GA). Perhaps the best performance was by fifth place finisher Patrice Gates (Villa Rica Middle School, GA). Gates, only an eight-grader, improved her season best by six feet to move up to sixth on the national performance list.

David Schiedt (Lassiter, Marietta, GA) won the boy’s competition by nearly five feet with a best of 72’01.75″. Four other boy’s surpassed sixety feet.
