SVM and Folksam Challenge Recap

I had two meets over the past week and both results were very disappointing to say the least. While the conditions at the Schweizer Vereinmesiterschaft on Saturday were less than ideal (I also had to throw the shot put), I had no excuses yesterday in Sweden and still threw poorly. The best I can do is to try to focus on the one positive note from each meet. On Saturday my club won the Swiss Club Championship and swept both the men’s and women’s titles for a historic 20th time. Yesterday, I got to visit Sweden for the first time, catch up with my friend Mattias Jons, and also meet several new throwers from Finland, Sweden, and Great Britain.

As I return to training tomorrow, I want to change something and throw better again. I think that’s everyone’s natural inclination when they hit a slump. I want to do something to prevent this season from sliding into oblivion like last year. I know I can throw farther. My coach knows I can throw farther. My training says I can throw farther, but it isn’t coming together yet. But rather than change, it is patience that will lead me there. This is no time to make a change. I trust my coach and know that things will come around when they need to if I just follow our plan.

A full length 16 kilo hammer?? Maybe that is leaving you too tired to throw well haha. Thats wild, but I guess it will build your specific strength.
Are you able to train in Switzerland the same way you do in Canada, with the 2 throwing and 2 lifting sessions every training day? Or do you have to do something different when you’re in Europe?

That might have something to do with it, but I only actually did a session with it before the meets since i just started this program. Also, I’m just doing one wind and a easy release with it…I don’t turn with it or even try to hammer it in the winds.

I’ve been able to maintain the twice a day training routine here. My new program has me alternate morning and afternoon workouts. Each workout has both throwing and lifting and I fit them all in. Luckily, I live right next to the hammer facility (which is off-site) and there is a weight room right next to the ring. I have to improvise with some of the heavy implements, but it works. The biggest change is my training times. Rather than training at 9:30 and 3:30, I have to train at 7:30 am and 5:00 or 6:00 pm on days that I work. On the weekends and days off of work during the week I keep the old schedule.
