12/19/13 U.S. High School Weight List

Bob Gourley’s first national performance lists of the 2014 season are out. While the season is young, it already includes some great performances like Adam Kelly’s (Barrington, RI) nation leading throw of 75’05.50″ and a season opening personal best 51’04.25″ for Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO). With more and more meets taking place over the coming weeks, more and more athletes will be on the lists.

Also this year there are several changes to the format of the lists. For the first time the lists will be divided with separate lists for the indoor and outdoor weight throws. The high school weight throw is an indoor event, but in a number of states indoor competition opportunities are limited and thus we will still be recognizing these performances on a separate list included in each update. In previous years indoor and outdoor performances have been included in the same lists with outdoor performances indicated with an “o” at the end of the line on the right which, among other things has caused a lot of confusion. Daniel Haugh (St. Pius X, Atlanta, GA) leads the new boys outdoor weight throw list with 79’06.50″ and Nyla Woods (Henry W. Grady, Atlanta, GA) leads the girls outdoor weight throw with 57’11.25″

Finally, since the high school weight throw events have been progressively increasing in participants and quality the last few years the standards to be included on the national performance lists have increased for the 2014 season. The new limits are 50 feet for the boys 25-pound weight, 35-feet for the girls 20-pound weight, and 40 feet for the heavier boys 35-pound weight.
