New Balance Nationals Championship Results
In a showdown of the two top girls in the country, national leader Haley Showalater (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO) narrowly edged defending champion Sabrina Gaitan (Sprayberry, Marietta, GA) to claim this year’s New Balance Nationals title. Makena Thomas (Narragansett, RI), seeded just eight entering the meet, finished only a few feet from her best to move up and secure bronze.
Delays postponed the boys championship final. The competition was planned for Saturday evening but could only be held on Sunday due to the weather. The emerging elite sections on Friday and Saturday also featured some great results. Teammates Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI) and Bobby Colantonio (Barrington, RI) have been trading wins all season. This time it was the senior, Kelly, who finished on top. His winning toss of 241’7″ not only captured the win by five feet, but also moved him up to number 9 on the all-time US high school list. Owen Russell (Moses Brown, Providence, RI) placed third with Seth Whitener (North Paulding, Dallas, GA) also breaking 200 feet in the competition.
