California High School Hammer Championships Results

While the event was a little delayed this year, the California High School Hammer Championships finally took place over the weekend. As is traditional, the event was held at two venues and the final rankings were determined by combining the results. A total of 45 athletes competed in the championships, with the the top 12 boys and girls finishers listed below.

State leader Tyler Merkley (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga, CA) was the big winner in the boy’s competition. Merkley set a seven foot personal best of 232’2″. The throw moves him up to third in the nation this year and fourth all-time in California. It also gave him more than a thirty foot cushion over second place. Steven Tofanelli (Del Campo, Fair Oaks, CA) was the top thrower up north and was just off of his personal best, while Nathan Bultman (West Ranch, Valencia, CA) added more than 15 feet to his best for third.

In the girl’s competition favorite Emelda Malm-Annan (Monterey Trail, Elk Grove, CA) also took the win. Caitlin McClain (Kimball, Tracy, CA) added a dozen feet to her personal best for second and Elizabeth Jones (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, CA) also tossed a small best to win a close competition for third and also produce the top mark out of the southern venue.
