USATF World Youth Trials (IL) Results
Just days after winning the USATF Junior National Championship, Bobby Colantonio (Barrington, RI) headed east for a chance to make Team USA for this month’s World Youth Championships. While the travel seemed to bring down his distance a little, he had no trouble getting the win again with the lighter 5-kilogram hammer. His winning throw of 71.39 meters out distanced runner up Joshua Hernandez (El Paso Del Valle, El Paso, TX). Kamryn Brinson (Marist, Atlanta, GA) won the girl’s competition.
The World Youth Championships begin in two weeks time in Cali, Colombia. They showcase the top athletes under 18 (born in 1998 or younger). Despite the win, selection is not guaranteed. The USATF selection committee will, at its sole discretion, select 41 athletes from all events to send to Colombia. Colantonio’s 5-kilogram personal best of 78.18 meters currently ranks him fourth in the world and should secure him a spot. But no other athletes have surpassed the international standards of 67 meters (boys) or 60 meters (girls) this season.
