Pan Am Junior Championships Women’s Hammer Results

The Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships kicked off on Friday in Edmonton. The first day of action featured the women’s Hammer throw and Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO) leading the competition from start to finish for the win. Despite her firm grip on the lead, she was challenged up until the end. America’s Lena Giger, a freshman at Stanford University, came within two feet of Showalter with a personal best of 57.99 meters on her last attempt. This toss earned her silver over Colombia’s Myra Gaviria Maldonado. Sabrina Gaitan (Sprayberry, Marietta, Ga), representing Guatemala, was just inches off her season’s best and placed fourth. The meet continues throughout the weekend with the men’s hammer taking place Sunday morning.
