Bob Gourley Awarded Doug Speck Award

New Balance Nationals Indoors was a successful meet for Barrington High School coach Bob Gourley in many regards. First off his athlete Bobby Colantonio take home the national title, marking the third year in a row that Barrington took home first place. But he also was awarded the Doug Speck Award for Excellence and Innovation for his work in promoting the hammer throw.

In addition to coaching, Gourley spends countless hours each week compiling the national weight throw and hammer throw performance lists, as well as tracking results. He is the engine behind HS Hammer.com and the growth of hammer throw in the US is a result of a his hard work. Gourley told Milesplit.com: “When I was notified by National Scholastics Foundation executive director Jim Spier about being awarded the prestigious Speck Award I was really overwhelmed. Knowing the number of previous recipients and the respect I have for them I was really overwhelmed. It’s exciting and very much appreciated.”
