New Balance Indoor Nationals (NY) Championship Results
Two new national leads highlighted the final day of action at New Balance Indoor Nationals. From start to finish the competition delivered on its promise to be the best meet of the year, and even deeper than last week’s meet.
After a slow start to the season, Jill Shippee (Shenendehowa, Clifton Park, NY) has come on in the past few weeks to challenge the national lead. She carried that momentum into nationals and took an early lead of two inches over national leader Gianna Rao (Ponaganset, North Scituate, RI) into the final rounds. That is when the action really started. In the fourth round Shippee added more than three feet to her best. Then again in the final round she added even more to finish with 65’6″, an improvement of nearly five feet over her previous best and good enough for to rank her fourth all-time in the high school weight throw. Rao held on for second and Sydnee Walker (King’s Ridge Christian, Alpharetta, GA) threw a personal best for third place. This Shippee’s second New Balance title after winning New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 2016.

After a foul and a safe throw, national leader Jacob Wickey (Medina, OH) had not yet secured a spot in the final entering his third attempt. He responded by adding nearly a foot to his personal best and held on for the win despite three more fouls. Shot put champion Jordan Geist (Knoch, Saxonburg, PA) came within two inches of the win on his final attempt and added more than three feet to his best. Brent Fairbanks (Austintown Fitch, Youngstown, OH) took third to keep the results in line with the national rankings. Both Wickey and Geist moved into the all-time top 20. In addition, four of the six threw personal bests and seven throwers broke 72 feet in an incredibly deep competition.
