Registration open for 2021 SPIRE National Throws Festival

With the cancellation of both the USATF Junior Championships and New Balance Nationals this summer, there is a lack of championship options for youth hammer throwers across the country. Former Olympic hammer throw finalist Kibwé Johnson has launched a new initiative aiming to fill the gap: the SPIRE National Throws Festival. Johnson joined the SPIRE Institute staff at the start of the year as head throwing coach and director of business development after five seasons at the IMG Academy and he’s taken on the throws festival as one of his first big projects.

At the 53rd annual Knights of Columbus Relays in Providence, state leader Logan Coles (Woonsocket, RI) took home the win, while Nicolette Ducharme (Cumberland, RI) won the girl’s competition with a personal best in her season debut.

Ocean State Running Meet 2 (RI) Results

State leader Logan Coles (Woonsocket, RI) won the second meet in the Ocean State Running Spring Track & Field Series on Saturday. Just behind him was his teammate Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan (Woonsocket, RI) who added nearly five feet to his personal best. One week after a big season’s best to start the outdoor season Sophia Gallucci (Coventry, RI) had another solid result to easily win the girl’s competition.

NSAF USA Meet of Champions (SC) Results

In the first big outdoor meet of the season, throwers from more than 10 states took part in the NSAF USA Meet of Champions in South Carolina. Collin Burkhart (Nazareth, PA) and Sidney Lake (Timber Creek, Orlando, FL) were the big winners, both setting personals bests to claim victory.

OATCCC Indoor Championships (OH) Results

Ohio’s top throwers threw at the OATCCC indoor championships over the weekend. The competition unfolded across a variety of divisions, but the breakthrough performance came from Tomas Rimac (Brundwick, OH). His winning throw in Division 1 landed well over 70 feet, making him the first thrower from Ohio to cross that barrier this year. The top girl’s mark came from Elizabeth Metz (Beachwood, OH) who broke the 50 foot barrier for the first time to win Division 2/3.

Senior Sarah Ortes (Classical, Providence, RI) and Logan Coles (Woonsocket, RI) were the winners at this year’s Weightarama. Coles continued his nearly undefeated season while Ortes hit a new personal best for the win.

Adidas Indoor Nationals (VA) Results

Logan Coles (Woonsocket, RI) rebounded from a disappointing finish at Saturday’s Rhode Island State Championships to set a new personal best and capture the win on Sunday at the adidas Indoor Nationals in Virigina. Teammamte Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan (Woonsocket, RI) also set a personal best for second place. In the girl’s competition Natalia Surdej (Lancaster, NY) had several throws over 60 feet to easily win the girl’s competition.

Rhode Island Indoor State Championships Results

John Fay (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) was the surprise winner at the Rhode Island Indoor State Championships on Saturday. He added more than three feet to his best in the fourth round to take the lead and never looked back, upsetting national leader Logan Coles (Woonsocket, RI), and in the process. State leader Sophia Gallucci (Coventry, RI) led four throwers over 50 feet in the girl’s competition to capture the win.
