This month I will be posting about three new books from Bondarchuk. Even though he just turned 75, he has been as busy writing as ever. The first book I will cover is Champion School: A Year to Year Model for Developing Elite Athletes. With the help of Dr. Michael Yessis, who also translated Bondarchuk’s successful Transfer of Training series, he turns his attention to the big picture of long-term development. Read more

Recruiting future hammer throwers.

Recruiting future hammer throwers.

The European Championships are not even over, but since my competition finished yesterday I’m already looking back on it. And I can’t help but feel mixed emotions. There was lots of good. I placed 21st in Europe. The support of my friends, family, and throwing community was amazing. I got to represent my country in front of a home crowd, and I helped more people learn about the hammer throw. I will write more about the positives in the future. But unfortunately there was also some bad. Mainly: the media coverage.

fb_icon_325x325Although this site transformed from my personal blog into HMMR Media last November, on Facebook we have continued to just use my personal Facebook page to help get the word out about new content and news.

I’ve said many times that the goal of this site is to grow beyond me, grow beyond hammer throwing, and grow beyond throwing in general. So it’s time we have our own Facebook page. I will continue to have my personal Facebook page with updates on my own posts, my training, and coaching. But the HMMR Media Facebook Page will highlight content from all of our authors and pass along links for other interesting content online.

The site is still growing and several new authors will be added this summer, so keep following the site as we continue to bring you the best track and field training content online.

Since launching HMMR Media in November the site has really taken off. More and more new visitors find the site every day and we are able to post new content almost daily. However I’m never satisfied and am always looking for ways to make the site better.

If you’ve been on the site in the last 24 hours, then you’ve likely noticed the first improvement I’ve made: a complete redesign of our page. Basically all I’ve kept is the logo. The content remains the same, but there are a number of smaller improvements to help out both you readers and the writers:

Looking Back at 2013: Best Training Posts

A lot has changed on this site over the past year. Just before the year started I launched memberships to the site. At the start of 2013 I completely redesigned the site. In November I relaunched the site as HMMR Media and brought on board great content from Kibwé Johnson, Nick Garcia, and HSHammer.com. And to end the year we launched a store which includes custom hammer wires, premium memberships, books, and coaching. All the while our readership has grown, which makes all the work worthwhile. I started this site to help myself and others learn more. With more people joining in the conversation we all benefit.

Looking back at the year, I wrote about a lot of interesting topics. In years past my most popular posts tended to be about current events. But this year training was the popular topic:

But many more were my favorites. Below is a compilation of my favorite training posts from 2013. A HMMR Media membership is required to read many of the articles, so if you haven’t joined yet it is a perfect way to start the new year.

Welcome to HMMR Media

Welcome to HMMR Media

I’ve been busy covering the hammer throw online for a long time. My first hammer throw webpage was HS Hammer.com, a compilation of news, results, and rankings for American youth throwers. The project initially started as a depository for Bob Gourley’s national rankings, but it slowly grew and now it is entering its 15th season. My own personal blog started much later, but is still entering its seventh season. I’ve also worked on quite a few other projects. As I mentioned last year, a lot of effort is wasted when I am trying to run in all directions at once. I focused my efforts on my personal blog and introduced subscriptions that gave members access to premium content. But that was just the first step in the plan.

Today I am happy to announce the launch of HMMR Media, an online platform for the throwing events. By building off the work I have done over the past 15 years, HMMR Media aims to become the best online resource for throwing events online. The new webpage features five blogs that bring together training resources, commentary, and news about the throwing events:

Announcing the 2013 Youth Hammer Grants

I wrote last month about how the career of legedary hammer thrower Harold Connolly coincided with the modernization of the sport. While progress slowed after he retired from throwing, he worked for another four decades to keep the momentum moving forward. Even now, three years after his death, his legacy is continuing that push via the successful USATF Foundation Harold Connolly Youth Hammer Throw Grants program he started back in 2005.

Since its inception, these grants have distributed over $32,000 to help cover specified training and competition expenses for 65 of the most promising youth hammer throwers in America. Looking back, these athletes have had some great success, especially over the past year. The success is first and foremost due to the hard work and dedication of each athlete over the past year, the goal of these grants is also to motivate and support these athletes and I think the amount of success by this group shows that this is working in that regard too.

Looking Back on 2012: Best Training Posts

The past year was a great one for the site. I saw visitors increase more than 50 percent, but more importantly I wrote about some very interesting topics and learned a lot in the process. As 2013 starts, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on some of the top posts from the last year.

As you can see, many of the most popular posts were about upcoming meets and/or current events in the hammer throwing community. But my favorite posts are the ones that discuss technique and training. These are the posts I read over and over again and keep learning from. Below are is a collection of my favorite of these types of posts from 2012. A complete list of posts can be found here. While a few are free, a cheap and easy membership is required to read many of them. Read more
